Folksong as Folklore

Folksongs that have the most value to folklorist are those that are written from first-hand experience, whether as a worker, on a job, or as an observer. In this respect the British Columbia Folklore Society has chosen a small number of songs that illustrate important aspects of the province’s social fabric from the enormous number that have been written. See BC Folk Songs. Even though the jobs to which some of the songs refer are, in many instances, no longer of primary importance to today’s industry and society, they were nevertheless occupations upon which the province was built. Songs written after the fact, about past events, historical figures, ghost towns and the like that were not experienced first-hand, are not included in this small sampling. Nevertheless, they do represent a large and important aspect of the province’s music industry. Many such songs are included in the following list of CDs and other recordings that the Society has in its possession.
